When BRP engineered the Can-am Defender they pulled out all the stops. They made it tough, capable and clever to excel at everything you demand of it. You'll feel the difference as soon as you sit inside the intelligently conceived cockpit and power up the proven Rotax engine. Pull away and feel the confidence that the sure-footedness of all-terrain 4WD brings. The Defender is available in four different versions: standard, DPS, XT and XT Cab. All will be powered by BRP-developed Rotax V-Twin engines; the standard, DPS and XT available in HD8 (50 horsepower) or HD10 (72 horsepower) and the XT Cab coming only with the HD10 mill.
Leveraging years of experience in powersports and small aircraft engine development, Can-Am introduces the new Rotax HD8 and HD10 V-Twin engine options. They took their well recognised Rotax V-Twin engine and recalibrated it for heavy-duty performance. Whether you're work-focused or trail riding, the 50-hp HD8 and 72-hp HD10 engines have proven power you can rely on.
The Defender is particularly rife with desifn elements aimed at enticing customers looking for a solid, all-around utility side by side. Regardless of engine size, each Defender comes with a PRO-TORQ transmission system which provides significantly more torque earlier in the rev range in comparison to its competition. The PRO-TORQ transmission combines technologies like Quick Response System (QRS) providing precise engagement, larger CVT ratios with a work-specific low gear ensuring optimal torque delivery, optimized ventilation for smoother power delivery, Electronic Belt Production for enhanced durability, and integrated engine braking for smooth and predictable deceleration.
The drivetrain on all but the standard HD8 model features a True 4 traction mode system, with choices between 2×4 open or locked rear differential and 4×4 open or locked rear differential. The standard HD8 has only selectable 2WD or 4WD options. All iterations of the Defender feature Visco-Lok QE auto-locking front differential. There’s also an Electronic Hill Descent Control system equipped on all models.
Suspension throughout the range is double A-arm with gas charged shocks out front featuring 10 inches of travel and a Torsional Trailing A-arm set-up out back with 10 inches of travel offered by the gas charged shocks. Braking is handled by dual 220mm ventilated discs at the front and rear, pinched by twin-piston calipers fore and single-piston calipers aft.
Other features shared by all Defender models include 40 litre fuel capacity, ROPS approved cage, 2000 pound towing capacity and 1000 pound cargo box capacity. Each model comes with Maxxis tires, the standard and DPS coming with 12-inch wheels (steel on the standard, cast aluminum on the DPS) and M923 model rubber while the XT and XT Cab feature 14-inch cast aluminum wheels and Maxxis Bighorn tires. All models come with a two year warranty.
The Can-Am Defender has a rugged outer appearance that opens up into a world of great innovation for the multi-use consumer. Starting with the simple task of getting in and out of the vehicle, Can-Am felt it was important to taper the forward corner egress of the seating in a way that wouldn’t drag on your legs while entering the cab and would also help prevent premature wear on the seat covering. This attention to detail runs deep in the cab of this rig.
Three people can sit on the Defender's 40/20/40 bench-type seat. Can-Am engineers took the traditional glove box and turned it into a very handy removable and water-resistant toolbox. Standing on the passenger side of the Defender you simply lift the handle and it pops right out. Under the passenger side seat there is yet another removable waterproof box. With the center seat and passenger seat lifted into their upright positions there is room for the trusty hunting dog or bags of seed that you might want to stay dry during transport.
